The Winter Games are still dominated by countries with cold climates and elaborate training programs, such as the US, which this year is sending a record 230 athletes, followed by Russia (225), and Canada (221). But from the Cayman Islands to Togo, in West Africa, warm weather countries are showing up more and more on Winter Olympic Games schedules. This year, 15 such countries, including a record 12 tropical countries – up from seven in 2010 – will have competitors in Sochi.

Dominica has cross country skiers. It's true. Just saw them on TV. They are Gary di Silvestri, 46 and originally from Staten Island, and his Italian wife Angelica Morrone de Silvestri, 48.
Gary will compete in the men's 15-kilometre classical race while Angelica will take part in the women's 10-kilometre classical.

Ireland is at Winters. I wanted to form a curling team for Ireland. Then I looked into the cost. Oh well.
Ireland is sending a five-strong team to the Winter Olympics in Sochi. Ireland’s best hopes lie with snowboarder Seamus O’Connor and skeleton competitor Sean Greenwood. "Top 20 finishes for both athletes would represent a fine achievement," says RTE.

Speaking of Canada: Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will miss at least six weeks after having a stroke last week, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manger Ray Shero.
The condition is treatable with blood thinners and at this point is not believed to be career threatening.
Further testing also revealed that Letang, 26, has had a very small hole in the wall of his heart since birth. This small defect in the wall is present in all individuals before birth but seals shut in most people. It is possible that the hole in the heart led to the stroke. -
